Miles to Steps Conversion Table
How many steps are in 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 miles? This table uses the standard average of 2,000 steps per mile. Your actual count will vary based on height; taller people take fewer, longer strides.
Steps Per Mile by Height and Pace
Your step count per mile depends on your height and walking speed. Taller people have longer strides, so they take fewer steps per mile. Walking faster also slightly reduces your steps per mile because your stride lengthens.
How the Miles to Steps Calculator Works
The core formula is straightforward: multiply your distance in miles by your steps per mile. The commonly cited average is 2,000 steps per mile, which assumes a stride length of about 2.6 feet (roughly average for an adult walking at a moderate pace).
Height makes a real difference. A 5'0" person takes about 2,560 steps per mile, while a 6'4" person takes about 2,017. That's a 25% difference. If you add your height in the calculator above, it uses the kinesiology formula (stride length = height × 0.413) to give you a personalised count instead of the generic average.
Calorie estimates use the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method. Each pace has an associated MET value; for example, moderate walking (3.0 mph) has a MET of 3.5. The formula is: calories = MET × weight in kg × time in hours. The default assumes 155 lbs (70 kg). Enter your weight in the optional fields for a number tailored to you.
Walking time adjusts for terrain and fitness level if you expand the optional settings. Hilly terrain slows you down; experienced walkers maintain pace more efficiently. Flat ground at a recreational fitness level is the default.
These are estimates for planning purposes. Your actual step count depends on your personal gait, terrain, and whether you stopped to photograph a particularly good sunset.
