About TimeToWalk
TimeToWalk exists because of a simple question: how long will this walk take?
That question led to a calculator. The calculator led to distance pages, step converters, calorie estimates, and eventually over a hundred walking guides covering everything from walking with bad knees to why your step count doesn't tell the whole story.
But the tools are just the door. The real point of this site is to make walking feel doable, approachable, and worth your time. Because it is.
Who Built This
TimeToWalk is built and maintained by Pete, a 47-year-old in the Pacific Northwest who started walking as part of his own health journey. He's not a personal trainer or a doctor. He's a guy with a family, a desk job's worth of sitting, and a conviction that walking is the most underrated exercise on the planet.
Pete builds niche tool sites that go deep on one topic, do it well, and treat people like adults. TimeToWalk is the walking entry in that portfolio. Every calculator, every guide, and every encouraging nudge on this site comes from someone who genuinely believes that a 20-minute walk can change the trajectory of your day, and that doing it consistently can change the trajectory of your life.
How the Tools Work
The calculators on this site use the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method for calorie estimates, which is the same approach used in exercise science research. Walking speeds are based on peer-reviewed data on average walking paces. Step calculations use stride length formulas that adjust based on your height.
All calculations happen instantly in your browser. We don't collect your inputs, we don't require sign-ups, and the tools are completely free. The numbers are estimates, not medical advice, but they're grounded in real data and transparently explained on every tool page.
You can find the details on each calculator page:
- Walking Time Calculator — distance, pace, terrain, and calorie estimates
- Steps to Miles Calculator — convert steps to distance with height-based stride adjustment
- Miles to Steps Calculator — the reverse: distance to step count
- Calorie Calculator — calories burned by distance, weight, and pace
- Treadmill Speed Chart — quick reference for treadmill pace settings
The Content
The walking guides on this site are written to be genuinely useful, not to fill a content quota. Every article is written with care, reviewed for accuracy on health claims, and updated when information changes. We don't use filler, we don't pad word counts, and we don't pretend to have credentials we don't have.
When a topic touches on medical territory (walking with diabetes, walking after surgery, walking and blood pressure), we stick to what the research supports and encourage you to talk to your doctor about your specific situation. We're not a substitute for medical advice. We're a walking buddy who does his homework.
How This Site Makes Money
Right now, it doesn't. TimeToWalk is a young site building trust and traffic. When the time is right, we plan to run display advertising through Mediavine. When that happens, ads will appear around the content, never inside the calculator tools. The tool experience is sacred. You'll never see a pop-up interrupt your calculation or an ad blocking your results.
